About the CETL® Certification — Tailored for Today’s Hoosier EdTech Leaders

The CETL® (Certified Education Technology Leader) program isn’t just another certification—it’s the only nationally accredited, practice-based credential that recognizes the real-world expertise of K-12 technology leaders. It combines technical skill, educational insight, leadership, and the ability to manage the tools and people that keep our schools running smoothly—ensuring technology truly supports student learning.

Here in Indiana, we know that being a school tech leader means wearing a lot of hats. The CETL® credential sets apart those who’ve gone the extra mile—leaders who understand how to bridge the gap between IT and instruction, and who bring 21st-century vision to every classroom. It’s not just a certificate to hang on the wall—it’s a powerful professional development journey that helps leaders grow and lead with confidence.

To earn the CETL®, you’ll need to meet eligibility requirements, pass a rigorous multiple-choice exam, agree to a Code of Conduct, and complete a recertification process every three years. It’s a challenge—but one that proves you're serious about leading the way in education technology.

And the best part? There are three different pathways to help you earn your CETL®, depending on your experience, goals, and learning style—so you can find the route that fits you best.

CTO2B Mentorship

Perfect for aspiring or new CTOs and Technology Directors.

We’ll pair you with an experienced, practicing K-12 CTO or Technology Director from Indiana who’s been in your shoes and knows the ropes. Through one-on-one mentorship, you'll gain insights not just into the CETL® framework—but also into what it really takes to succeed in the role. It’s part certification prep, part leadership coaching, and 100% focused on your success.

Whether you’re stepping into the CTO role for the first time or are an instructional leader transitioning into tech leadership, this pathway gives you the support and connection you need.

Study Groups

Ideal for seasoned technology leaders who don’t need a mentor—but do need a study plan!

You’re already doing the work—now it’s time to validate it. Our CETL® Study Groups bring together tech leaders from across the state in a structured, collaborative setting to review the CETL® framework, discuss best practices, and hold each other accountable. You’ll walk through the body of knowledge together, share real-life examples, and build a sense of community while preparing to crush the exam.

Think of this as a book club—but for tech directors who want to sharpen their skills and earn a nationally respected credential along the way.

Self Study

The DIY route for highly independent learners.

If you prefer to set your own schedule and work at your own pace, self-study is a great option. We’ll point you toward the right materials, connect you with practice resources, and cheer you on from the sidelines. You’ll still be part of the broader CETL® community here in Indiana, but with the freedom to prepare in a way that fits your life.

This is the no-frills, roll-up-your-sleeves option—perfect for folks who love to dig in, focus, and get the job done solo.
